Rams OC happy with Ty Simpson's consistent growth in practice
The Los Angeles Rams are entering the 2026 season with a loaded roster, but just because the team has championship expectations, that doesn't mean the franchise can go all-in for just this year. Having already taken a massive step toward protecting their future, they drafted quarterback Ty Simpson with the plan to use whatever time Matthew Stafford has left in the NFL to get him ready for the QB1 job.
Simpson, a natural go-getter, has already taken every chance to improve , going above and beyond to develop as best and as fast as possible. This has drawn praise from teammates and coaches alike, with offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase commenting on Wednesday that they're letting Simpson learn without restriction.
"He stayed hungry," said Scheelhaase. "He has come in, figured out the areas that he's got to improve eachday. Everything pre-snap, certainly, but even just post-snap, how the field is distributing, where he can go with the football. I think the more reps he's getting, that's a blessing of these days. Him and Stetson (Bennett) get a bulkload of those reps and we're not pulling anything back. We're challenging them in all phases of our offense. They've done a really good job."
Simpson isn't getting as many reps in practice as Stafford and Bennett are, but he's taking every opportunity to learn from his coaches and teammates. He's asking good questions in meetings and improving on the field, which is all a team can expect from a rookie quarterback.
"Ty has done a really good job learning from each and every day," Scheelhaase added. "Whether he's out there taking the rep, whether he's absorbing it, he's asking all the right questions in the meeting room so you appreciate that. You've certainly seen him go and make some throws and go and compete in a really cool way too. I think in some of those competitive moments at the end of practice, you've seen him at his best too, which is cool to see just a football player come to life in a competitive environment."
Simpson will only get better with experience. That means constant reps against the best and there aren't many defenses better than the Rams. While reports have varied about his performance in practice, what is indisputable is that Simpson continues to stack days, growing in an offense that is tailor-made for someone else.
That's how the Rams are developing a quarterback who can win in any scenario. Now it's time for Simpson to put all these new pieces together.
