He's what we'd describe as the consummate professional, a freak of nature who is also a wealth of knowledge any up-and-comer or established veteran would be wise to lean on. Campbell turns 40 on September 1. Yes, he can still contribute between the whistles, but after nearly two decades in the NFL, his impact extends past the stat sheet .
Campbell returned to practice this week after the Ravens excused him from the opening stretch of training camp as he and his family continued to grieve a devastating personal traged y. Baltimore eased him back into work, limiting him to individual drills while allowing him to ramp up at his own pace.
Jesse Minter sees Calais Campbell as a force multiplier
Head coach Jesse Minter recently spoke with the media and explained that Campbell's value extends well beyond what happens on Sundays. Baltimore could have added any veteran. They didn't roll the dice here. His inclusion on the 2026 roster is intentional.
"He's like a force multiplier of just how he operates, the wisdom that he brings, the leadership that he brings. On top of [that], he is still a really high-caliber player for his position. So, we are excited to work him in, start to ramp him in to get ready. That will be at a pace that is good for him. And just again, [we are] excited to have him here. The guys love him. He brings such a great value to that defensive line room, and [I] just love having Calais out there."
That description may be the highest compliment a coach can give a veteran. Rather than simply elevating his own play, Campbell elevates everyone around him through his preparation, professionalism and experience.
The Ravens feature one of the NFL's younger defensive cores, making Campbell's presence even more valuable. His influence can't be measured by tackles or sacks alone. It's reflected in meeting rooms, on practice fields and in the daily habits that shape winning teams.
Baltimore signed Campbell because they believe he can still make plays. Just as importantly, they brought him back because they believe he can make players better. For a Ravens team with championship aspirations, that type of leadership may prove just as valuable as anything he'll contribute once the regular season begins.
