Former Texas RB ready finally ready for after two years injured
His NFL career has had to wait two full seasons. Former Texas Longhorns running back Jonathan Brooks is finally "fully healthy" and ready to take part in his first NFL training camp , even though he's starting his third year as a Carolina Panther.
After his first practice, Brooks spoke to the assembled media about his long recovery from back-to-back knee surgeries. The former UT star says the recovery journey tested his resolve. But with help from his fiancée and teammate Chuba Hubbard, Brooks says he made it through the tough times.
"To be honest, it sounds cliché to say, but I don't know where I would be (without Hubard)," Brooks said. "Since I first got here, you know, I came in with an injury and he helped me. He took me under his wing and really guided me how to rehab, how to practice, all of that. And then, especially when I got hurt again. He was right there with me. He helped me throughout the whole way."

— Steve Reed (@SteveReedAP) July 28, 2026 Brooks, who injured his knee the first time in his final season at Texas, was taken by the Panthers in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His second ACL tear was a non-contact injury while making a cut move as a rookie. He spent all of 2025 rehabbing.
Brooks says Hubbard helped mold him into a professional and says he and the former Oklahoma State Cowboy now share a lifelong bond.
"He was there when I got baptized and that just goes to say how much we've grown, our brotherhood.," Brooks said.
The Panthers are scheduled to play in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 6. Brooks says he's eager to get through his first in-game cut.
"For me, being back out there, it definitely is a confidence booster to know that I'm fully healed," Brooks said. "I can take hits again and I can be out there with my teammates, doing everything that I need to do to help the team."
In his three seasons on the Forty Acres, Brooks played in 22 games and had 27 touchdowns, 1,479 rushing yards on 238 carries and 261 receiving yards on 25 receptions.
