MLS commissioner hopes New York City FC can sign Christian Pulisic
MLS commissioner Don Garber is hopeful that a rumored New York City FC move for U.S. men's national team star Christian Pulisic comes to fruition.
At 27, Pulisic is already among the best men's players the U.S. has ever produced. But the Hershey, Pennsylvania native has never played professionally in his home country, having joined Borussia Dortmund as a teenager.
From there, Pulisic moved to Chelsea in 2019 and joined current club AC Milan in 2023.
As it prepares to open Etihad Park next summer, New York City is on the lookout for a marquee signing to draw fans to its brand-new stadium in Queens.
Pulisic has been rumored to be high on the list, and Garber would love to see one of American soccer's biggest stars return home.
"I hope that they can sign a Christian Pulisic," Garber said to Brian Kilmeade on Fox News.
"I believe he would be great in our league, and I believe our league would be great for him. Give him an opportunity to do what Landon Donovan did – come to Major League Soccer, spread your wings, be a star, be just up the road from your family in Pennsylvania. I hope they get it done."
What has New York City FC said about Pulisic?
Earlier this month, NYCFC president Brad Sims confirmed that his club had interest in landing Pulisic. But Sims called a possible deal "dead in the water" for now due to AC Milan's unwillingness to sell.
"If you ask any of my 29 counterparts across the league if they would be interested in having Christian Pulisic on their team, I'm pretty sure you'd get 29 yesses," Brad Sims said at a MLS event.
"Would MLS from a league standpoint love to have Christian Pulisic here? I think the answer to that would be yes," Sims added. "If AC Milan doesn't want to give him up, then it's dead in the water.
"And so I think ultimately we're believers that Christian wants to play in MLS, wants to be back home and at whatever the point in time that is, we would think and hope that New York City FC would be very high on his list of teams that he would want to play for."
Pulisic's AC Milan contract runs through June 2027, with a club option to extend that deal by a year.
The 27-year-old has been among Milan's most consistent performers since joining from Chelsea, but suffered through a major slump that saw him go scoreless for the entire second half of the 2025-26 season.
Pulisic wasn't at his best for the World Cup this summer either, failing to find the net for the USMNT as it went out with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16.
