Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has no intention of becoming a more cautious player after recovering from the ankle injury that ended his 2025 season.
Bo Nix appears ready to pick up exactly where he left off before an unfortunate ankle injury ended his second NFL season. The Denver Broncos quarterback has participated fully during the opening days of training camp, moving comfortably inside and outside the pocket after undergoing two procedures during the offseason.
Nix suffered a fractured right ankle during Denver’s divisional-round playoff victory and was forced to miss the AFC championship game. The injury required surgery, followed by another procedure to remove bone spurs. After leading Denver to a 14-3 regular-season record and its first playoff victories since the franchise won Super Bowl 50, Nix entered the offseason facing questions about whether the injury could change his playing style.
His answer could not have been much clearer.

Nix told reporters following Saturday’s practice that he will not hesitate to leave the pocket or scramble on his surgically repaired ankle during the 2026 season.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 2, 2026 “Absolutely not,” Nix said when asked if the injury would change how he plays, according to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold. “I’m going to roll out. I’m going to be as athletic as I can be. It’s a strength of ours, and so we’ve got to use our strengths.
“For me, that’s when I feel at my best, that’s when I feel free. When I’m playing like that, when I’m moving around, it’s a good thing.”
That mobility has been an important part of Nix’s emergence as Denver’s franchise quarterback.
Through his first two NFL seasons, Nix has recorded 7,706 passing yards and 54 touchdown passes. He has also added 786 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground, giving coach Sean Payton another dimension when designing the Broncos’ offense.
Asking Nix to abandon that part of his game could take away one of his greatest strengths. Based on his comments and early work at training camp, Denver does not appear interested in making that adjustment.

Broncos receive encouraging signs at training camp
Nix has practiced without restrictions through the opening portion of camp and said his ankle feels “normal.” Payton has also expressed confidence in the quarterback’s recovery and conditioning. The Broncos are expected to continue building Nix’s workload as the preseason approaches, but there has been little indication that his ankle will force the team to alter its offensive plans.
That is encouraging news for a franchise attempting to build upon its breakthrough 2025 season. Denver’s 14 victories established the team as one of the AFC’s top contenders, but Nix’s injury prevented him from finishing the postseason run. His absence in the conference championship game also showed how important he has become to the Broncos’ championship hopes.
The next challenge will be ensuring Nix remains healthy without limiting the freedom that helped him succeed over his first two seasons.
There will naturally be some concern the first time he takes a hit or is forced to scramble during a game. For now, however, Nix is showing no fear and no interest in changing the aggressive style that helped transform Denver into a contender.
