ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Houston Astros signed 20 of 22 players they selected in this month's MLB draft, the club announced Monday, the deadline for teams to sign their picks.
Houston previously announced the signings of its top two picks , outfielder Logan Hughes (No. 17 overall) and pitcher Jack Radel (No. 28). Both players signed for slightly under-slot bonuses. Hughes received an approximate $3.41 million bonus and Radel a $3 million bonus, according to a person with knowledge of the terms. Slot value was $4,868,600 for the No. 17 pick and $3,363,600 for the No. 28 pick this year.
The Astros redirected some of those savings to sign two of their high school selections. Third-round pick Keon Johnson, an infielder from Macon (Ga.) First Presbyterian, signed for $2 million, per MLB.com's Jim Callis. Slot value for the No. 93 pick was $846,900. No. 133 overall pick Beau Peterson, an infielder from Mill Valley (Kan.) HS, signed for $3 million, per MLB.com. Slot value for the No. 133 pick was $569,600.
The two draft picks Houston did not sign were its other two prep selections: Jack Beck, an infielder out of Columbia Central (Tenn.) HS drafted in the 13th round, and James Tronstein, an infielder from Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) HS taken in the 15th round. Tronstein told The Tennessean last week that he would forgo signing and attend Vanderbilt. Beck had a commitment to Georgia Southern.
Other day-one draft picks whose signings were announced Monday were second-rounder Wes Mendes, the left-handed pitcher from Florida State selected at No. 57 overall by Houston, and fourth-rounder Kam Durnin, a shortstop from University of Missouri drafted at No. 121 overall. Peterson was drafted after the fourth round with a compensation pick for Framber Valdez signing elsewhere in free agency.
In addition to their 20 draft picks, the Astros announced the signings of three non-drafted free agents - right-handed pitchers John Carver (Adelphi University) and Carson Estridge (West Virginia) and infielder Drew Wyers (Mississippi State).
