See the full story · 1 sourcesMike McCarthy and the Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for a future without Aaron Rodgers when he retires at the end of the 2026 NFL season. This paves the way for a younger generation of quarterbacks to handle the mantle in 2027 and beyond.
Rodgers is preparing for the 22nd and last season of his career, his second with the Steelers. Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar make up the rest of the quarterback room, indicating a lot of youth after Rodgers.
McCarthy conversed with media on Sunday, addressing multiple areas on the team. One of those topics was about Rodgers and the younger quarterbacks, showing how the future Hall of Famer has made a significant impact on mentoring everyone in that room.
“He’s always done that, which I’ve always had a lot of respect for,” McCarthy said via Chris Adamski of TribLIVE. “I think it’s an important component of your quarterback room and the dynamics of the quarterback room. Keeping the accountability throughout that process, but now it’s at a different level now. He shares constantly, and he’s very reflective as you make tweaks.”

Rodgers led the Steelers to an AFC North title and a playoff berth following a Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He finished the 2025 season throwing for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, and rushing for a touchdown.
The Steelers will attempt to improve on their 10–7 record of the past three seasons. They also attempt to end their seven-game playoff game losing streak dating back to the 2016 season. This season will begin with only the team’s fourth head coach in 58 seasons as McCarthy leads the team for 2026 and beyond, replacing Mike Tomlin in the process.
Pittsburgh’s campaign will begin at home against the Atlanta Falcons. That game commences on Sept. 13 with kickoff taking place at 1 p.m. ET.
