Scripps layoffs arrive in Texas as local TV news jobs disappear
Layoffs reached Texas on Tuesday as E.W. Scripps began cutting jobs at local television stations across the country. Among those who were laid off are producers, directors and digital journalists, sources told Chron.
The broadcaster, which owns nearly 60 television stations in more than 40 U.S. markets, is reducing its workforce as it expands the use of automation and artificial intelligence in its television operations, according to The Desk . The exact number of layoffs and the positions affected have not been disclosed.
Managers at some stations spent the past week holding meetings with newsroom, creative services and sales employees ahead of the layoffs, The Desk reported. Some production-related jobs are expected to be consolidated as automated systems are introduced into local news workflows.
Scripps operates four television stations in Texas: ABC affiliates KRHD in Bryan-College Station and KXXV in Waco, and Corpus Christi stations KRIS 6 , the NBC affiliate, and KAJA, a Telemundo affiliate. In 2019, the company acquired KRIS and KAJA from Cordillera Communications and KXXV and KRHD from Gray Television and Raycom Media.

The reported cuts come as Scripps continues a broader company-wide transformation aimed at reducing costs and increasing efficiency. In February, the broadcaster announced a plan to improve its financial performance through 2028 by leveraging new technology, including AI and automation , while reaffirming its commitment to local journalism.
The layoffs would mark the latest round of workforce reductions for Scripps. Last year, the company eliminated about 200 jobs when it shut down its national over-the-air Scripps News channel, and earlier this year confirmed additional position cuts at some local television stations.
