Imagine a movie in which the main character gets taken out within the first five minutes and then for the next hour, you have to figure out the plot. Somehow, little by little and minute by minute, it continues to hold your attention until suddenly, you’re hooked and you can’t stop watching, almost forgetting what happened at the beginning as you hurtle toward the end.
The 2026 Boston Red Sox are that movie, and on Monday, their trade deadline added yet another chapter to the incredibly entertaining, unpredictable story that is their season. The Sox executed the biggest blockbuster not featuring Tarik Skubal , and in doing so, they’ve gone from a team that looked dead in the water to one that looks like a near-lock for October .
Boston’s acquisition Monday of three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Orioles is the latest example of just how wild their season has been, how much they’ve turned their fortunes around and their renewed belief that they can do something special in 2026.
When the Red Sox fired longtime manager Alex Cora and the majority of their coaching staff in April, Boston was the talk of baseball — and not for good reason. The managerial change, coming after a 10-17 start to the season, represented another internal disaster following the Rafael Devers saga in 2025. And with a malaise hanging over the franchise, it didn’t seem like this was something that could be fixed .
Not to mention, all eyes were on Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, whom many believed was fighting to save his job. With Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet both missing the majority of the first half due to injury, there was little hope things would turn around. The Sox finished June seven games under .500, at 36-43.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, came a smoking hot July in which they went 21-4 and rattled off a 15-game winning streak to tie the franchise record and completely turn their season around. Over the span of a few weeks, this team went from almost guaranteed trade deadline sellers to one of the most aggressive buyers .
Leading up to the trade deadline, many teams will adopt a similar refrain — especially those who, like the Red Sox in early July, are hovering around .500.
“We have to give the front office a reason to buy.”
The Red Sox certainly did that this summer, and the front office responded.
Rutschman will now become a centerpiece in Boston’s lineup, boosting the team’s confidence that is already sky-high. The addition of the 28-year-old catcher is also good news for the 2027 Sox, as he has another year of club control before becoming a free agent. While Rutschman is currently on the injured list due to a wrist injury, he’s expected to return in time to help the Sox make a push for the postseason.
Also Monday, the Sox acquired left-handed reliever Erik Miller from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for infielder Marcelo Meyer, and they added outfielder Eli White from Atlanta Braves in exchange for pitching prospect Tyler Uberstine. On July 25, the Sox acquired infielder Curtis Mead from the Nationals for starting pitcher Connelly Early, but Mead is now expected to miss 6-8 weeks after fracturing his wrist in his Red Sox debut .
Adding Rutschman was a clear sign that Breslow and the Red Sox brass believe in their players. The team’s aggressive moves at the deadline as a whole represent the front office doubling down on the belief that this team can make noise in a wide-open American League.
As their rivals in the Bronx await the returns of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, the Red Sox making a push to win the division is not out of the question. Entering play Tuesday, Boston sits just two games behind the Yankees and 5.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. The Sox have a comfortable hold on the AL’s second wild card, with the Yankees currently in the top spot.
Now that the dust has settled on the 2026 trade deadline , Breslow deserves some credit for what Boston has been able to do this year. The Red Sox’s chief baseball officer took a lot of criticism for his team’s early struggles, his communication around the matter and, ultimately, the decision to fire Cora.
Much of that criticism was fair. As the front-facing member of the organization, if things had failed this season, it would’ve fallen at his feet. But as it turns out, the Red Sox have thrived under interim manager Chad Tracy, going 50-34 since he took over.
When the team traded Devers last season, Breslow said the Red Sox would be a better team at the end of the season than they were the moment they traded him. And he was right. The 2025 Red Sox made it to the postseason as a wild card.
After Cora’s firing, the sentiment was similar, with Breslow saying he believed almost a full season of runway would give Boston a chance to get back on track before October. It wasn’t always pretty, but on those matters, he’s 2-for-2.
At this deadline, Breslow rewarded his team for its resilience with one of the biggest moves in the addition of Rutchman. With the team playing with as much confidence and swagger as any in the sport, there’s no telling what they might be able to do in the up-for-grabs American League.
