The Detroit Tigers , in what could've been the final start of Tarik Skubal's career in Detroit, fell to the Baltimore Orioles in extra-innings.
It wasn't just a sad loss for the Tigers; it might've been the nail in the coffin for Detroit to be sellers this season as well. With just a few days left before the August 3 MLB trade deadline, the Tigers' plan for the deadline has become clear.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan on SportsCenter , the Tigers' plan with Skubal is clear: the back-to-back Cy Young-winning ace is fully expected to be traded in the coming days.
Tigers expected to trade Tarik Skubal, per Jeff Passan
"Yeah, Tarik Skubal is going to be traded," Passan said. "... the expectation is that's going to happen in the next day or two..."

— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) July 30, 2026 This update from Passan shouldn't come as a huge surprise. The Tigers haven't played well enough this season to keep up with the AL Central or the AL Wild Card.
Even though they could still go on a run and make the postseason, it's not a guarantee, and it would be a massive mistake to go through the deadline, not trade Skubal, and still miss the playoffs.
In the wake of that Tigers' loss to drop them to 51-58 on the season, Passan is certain that Skubal is going to be traded, with such a move coming fairly soon.

Skubal is a free agent after the 2026 season, and the return package in a trade would be significantly greater than what the Tigers could get if they lose him in free agency.
Scott Harris and the Tigers should do well in a Skubal trade, landing a king's ransom of a team's top prospects and MLB-ready players, ideally young pitching, to move on from the Cy Young left-hander who has a 2.79 ERA this season.
Teams around baseball will be clamoring for Skubal, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers as the current top options for a Skubal trade.
But, regardless of where he goes, Tigers fans should fully expect to see Skubal traded this summer by the August 3 MLB trade deadline. Skubal is likely to go, and Casey Mize, Gleyber Torres, and others could follow suit in the coming days as well.
