First, The Original Series was "real" Star Trek. Then The Next Generation wasn't. Deep Space Nine was too dark. Enterprise wasn't Trek enough. Discovery was too different. Today, Strange New Worlds is praised for feeling like classic Star Trek, while whatever series comes next will almost certainly be accused of ruining the franchise all over again.
The funny thing is, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) settled that argument back in 1969. Not with "Live long and prosper." Not during one of Kirk's grand speeches. Just eight words spoken almost in passing during the season 3 episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield."
"Change is the essential process of all existence."
It's the greatest quote Spock ever spoke in Star Trek: The Original Series . Not because it's the most famous, but because almost 60 years later, it still explains the character, the franchise, and even the fans who can't stop arguing about it.
First broadcast on Jan. 10, 1969, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" follows the crew of the Enterprise as they encounter Bele (Frank Gorshin), whose face is black on the right side and white on the left, and Lokai (Lou Antonio), whose colors are reversed. The two are consumed by a hatred so absolute that it survives the destruction of their own civilization. It's one of The Original Series' most direct commentaries on racism, and one that's often criticized for being anything but subtle.
Spock's observation comes as the crew watches two people who simply cannot move beyond generations of prejudice. Within the episode, he's talking about racism. More broadly, he's making a point about progress itself. Societies that refuse to change eventually destroy themselves.
No Star Trek character embodies the lesson on the importance of change more completely than Spock. When audiences first met him, he seemed almost entirely defined by logic. Human emotion was something to suppress rather than understand. Yet over the course of The Original Series , Kirk and Dr. McCoy continually challenge that worldview. Spock never abandons logic. He simply realizes it isn't enough on its own.
That's what makes him such a fascinating character. Spock isn't static. Every season leaves him a little wiser, a little more compassionate, and a little more comfortable embracing both halves of his identity. Long before later films and series continued that journey, The Original Series was already showing a man quietly becoming someone different than he was when audiences first met him.
Every era of Star Trek has reinvented the franchise in some way. The Next Generation proved it could survive without Kirk. Deep Space Nine questioned the Federation's ideals. Voyager stranded its crew on the far side of the galaxy. Enterprise looked backward. Discovery reinvented the franchise for streaming television. Most recently, Strange New Worlds has blended modern storytelling with the optimism of The Original Series .
Not every experiment has been universally embraced. But if Star Trek had simply tried to recreate 1966 over and over again, it's hard to imagine it still existing today.
Ironically, the people who love Star Trek sometimes struggle the most with the idea Spock was expressing. Every new series is greeted by some fans insisting it isn't "real Star Trek." Then, given enough time, opinions soften. The Next Generation eventually became a classic. So did Deep Space Nine . Even Enterprise , once dismissed by many viewers, has undergone a remarkable reappraisal in recent years.
That's not true of every series, of course, and fans will always disagree about which versions of Star Trek work best. But the cycle itself never seems to change. New becomes different, different becomes accepted. Accepted eventually becomes beloved.
Maybe that's why every generation thinks Star Trek has changed too much. And maybe that's why every generation eventually discovers it hasn't changed nearly as much as they thought. In other words, the fandom keeps proving Spock right.
Plenty of Spock quotes are more famous. "Live long and prosper" became one of television's most recognizable greetings. Others are funnier ("I am endeavoring, ma'am, to make a mnemonic memory circuit using stone knives and bearskins"), more emotional ("After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true"), or more immediately quotable ("Fascinating").
But no quote from Star Trek: The Original Series has proven more prophetic.
For nearly 60 years, those eight words have described the evolution of one of television's greatest characters, one of its longest-running franchises, and even the audience that has grown alongside both.
