Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is one of the most decorated coaches of his era with an NFL stint that has spanned decades. The 54-year-old made his NFL coaching debut in 2001 as a defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Eventually, his legacy has been defined by the 19 years he spent as the head coach for the Steelers from 2007 to 2025. Now, though, the veteran coach has found a new role, and it does not involve coaching. On Thursday, Aug. 6, Tomlin officially made his debut as a football analyst for NBC Sports. More specifically, he is joining the Football Night in America team, which consists of sports analysts Maria Taylor and Mike Florio, along with former NFL players Jason Garrett and Devin McCourty.
NFL fans reacted to Tomlin making his broadcasting debut.
“This might be a hot take. Maybe it’s not. Just from listening to this clip alone, I believe Mike Tomlin will be the next John Madden. This is broadcasting magic,” one fan said .
However, some were less enthusiastic and believed he should still be coaching.
“Seeing Mike Tomlin without a hat on just looks so weird and wrong,” one user wrote .
Tomlin became a football analyst after he stepped down as head coach of the Steelers in January of this year. In his 19-year run, he never had a losing season with the team and won Super Bowl XLIII. In his final campaign with the franchise, Tomlin led the team to the AFC wild-card round, in which they were defeated by the Houston Texans, 30-6.

In a post on X, the SNF on NBC team celebrated Mike Tomlin’s debut on FNIA as a football analyst. American sports commentator Maria Taylor welcomed Tomlin, while poking fun at him for being a rookie on the broadcast as opposed to his lengthy coaching career. Tomlin responded by taking on the challenge.
There are no signs, as of the moment, towards a return to coaching for Tomlin as his focus is on being an analyst and spending time with his family. For the 2026 NFL campaign, the Steelers employed Mike McCarthy as the 17th head coach in the franchise’s history.
