There might not be any WNBA player more talked about than Caitlin Clark ever since she made her debut in the league three years ago. This season, Clark has again been a marquee player while also being involved in numerous controversial exchanges with the media, players and referees.
In an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews before the WNBA All-Star Game, Clark called out the media for a “false characterization” and felt “fearful” about what narrative her actions might build.
In response, Elle Duncan, the lead host for WNBA coverage on USA Network, took issue with Caitlin Clark and her fans for blaming the media. This was not taken well by Bobby Burack from the conservative sports outlet Outback who called out Duncan on Wednesday on X.
“According to Elle Duncan, Caitlin Clark is to blame for USA Today saying she could cause an Emmett Till-like situation because she hasn’t denounced her fans yet. This is brain-dead commentary,” Burack posted .
In Nancy Armour’s column about Caitlin Clark on July 22, she wrote that the Fever star’s on-court reactions and “flopping” had put other WNBA players in danger.
What did Elle Duncan say about Caitlin Clark?
Duncan claimed that Clark has fans who aren’t actually her fans but are only using her to build a narrative. She believes that Clark can stop these “fans” as opposed to calling out the media for making a certain discourse.
“The media highlights the stories, and they show it. But at the same time, the media did not make up that members of congress are trying to get literal government intervention into whether you fouled too hard. This stuff has to stop. It’s not going anywhere,” Duncan said .
She praised Clark for the player she is and the talent she possesses. But she also said that the world is not ideal where Clark can just be the great player, great leader and the nice person she is. Similarly, she also advocated for the other players as it is not an ideal reality for anyone. She suggested that Clark’s team needs to go back to the drawing board to manage the chaos.
