Juicy J added to the discourse on Wednesday (Aug. 26) during an appearance with his brother Project Pat on Jimmy Kimmel Live! , which is being guest hosted by Jelly Roll . He recalled Dolly Parton graciously writing Three 6 Mafia a letter after the Memphis rap group beat her for an Oscar in 2006.
“The only person almost excited as y’all were was Dolly Parton,” Jelly Roll quipped after they replayed the 2006 Oscars clip, which showed Parton cheering on Three 6 even in defeat.
“She sent us a letter and signed it and said, ‘Congratulations and I’m glad somebody from Tennessee won the Oscar,'” Juicy J shared of Parton’s kind gesture.
Juicy said he met Dolly before they went on stage and then headed to the “longest Oscar party in the world” to celebrate the group’s victory.
Three 6 Mafia made history at the 2006 Oscars when “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” ( Hustle & Flow ) won best original song over Dolly Parton’s “Travelin’ Thru” ( Transamerica ) and Kathleen York’s “In the Deep” ( Crash ).
With the win, Three 6 became the first hip-hop group to win an Oscar; they were also the first rap act to perform at the ceremony.
Dolly Parton died in Nashville on Tuesday (Aug. 25) following a brief battle with cancer, according to a statement shared by the “9 to 5” singer’s team. The 10-time Grammy winner and influential songwriter was 80.
As for Juicy J and Project Pat, they performed “Yes Lord” on Kimmel from the brothers’ Dem Goats album, which arrived in July.
