GLENDALE — Arizona Cardinals Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald admits ring-chasing crossed his mind, but his loyalty to the franchise mattered more.

For nearly two decades, Fitzgerald had every reason to consider leaving Arizona in search of the one accomplishment that eluded his Hall of Fame career: a Super Bowl ring. The former Cardinals star recently acknowledged that he did think about it and even discussed the possibility, but those conversations never felt right to turn into reality.
“I would be lying to you if it didn’t cross my mind,” Fitzgerald said to reporters ahead of Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game. “I didn’t think about it, you know, even maybe even had conversations about it, but never seriously tried to put it in motion.”
Fitzgerald’s candid admission offers a glimpse into the mindset of a star player weighing loyalty against the pursuit of a championship. As stars increasingly join contenders in search of a title, Fitzgerald’s perspective highlights the value some still place on building something with the franchise that drafted them.
For Fitzgerald, winning a title wasn’t the only measure of success. His connection to Arizona ultimately carried more weight than joining an established contender.
“I loved where I was at,” Fitzgerald said. “I don’t know if it would have meant the same for me if I’d have went to somewhere who was already some super team.”

Despite having opportunities to explore other options, Fitzgerald remained committed to the organization throughout his 17-year NFL career, embracing the highs and lows that came with it.
Fitzgerald said he took pride in helping lay the foundation for a franchise that transformed from an afterthought into a Super Bowl contender. The relationships he built with teammates and the opportunity to help change the Cardinals’ culture outweighed the appeal of joining an established powerhouse.
“I was a part of that foundation,” Fitzgerald said. “I wanted to do something that hadn’t been done in Arizona.”
