Will New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez play in Saturday's Week 2 preseason matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles?
While the Patriots have not confirmed Gonzalez's status for the game, it is expected that the star defensive back will miss a second straight preseason game.
Gonzalez has not practiced since last Monday, a day before the team's scheduled joint training camp practice with the Indianapolis Colts . Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has noted multiple times that the absence is due to an injury that Gonzalez sustained, despite all of the concerns that it could be contract-related.
"Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable for the practice. That's the clarification," Vrabel stated . "Just like other players that I told to have treatment, and everybody has a plan here, there were other guys that were in that same category. If you want to list the names: Christian Elliss, Brenden Schooler, Harold Landry, Christian Barmore, et cetera. So make sure they're all included. They were all in the same group of what they did."
The Patriots and Gonzalez have continued to work behind the scenes on a potential contract extension.
There is hope that the team doesn't allow the contract negotiations to linger into the season, especially after the Seattle Seahawks set a new baseline for top cornerback money with Devon Witherspoon's recent contract extension .
Gonzalez had been a full participant at training camp up until last Tuesday.
