According to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard , Gibbs, who did report to training camp, did not take part in the team’s first practice on Wednesday.
Gibbs’ absence, which is not believed to be injury-related, according to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit , comes amid he and the Lions trying to hammer out a contract extension.
“(Gibbs) was not listed on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform or Non-Football-Injury list to start camp, suggesting his absence is not injury related,” Reisman wrote.

While Gibbs looks to be holding in, it may not last long. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this week that the two sides are close to getting something done.
“I think the Gibbs thing could be relatively quick, whatever that is,” Schefter said on the Brad Galli Show .

Gibbs, who is still just 24 years old, is coming off a season in which he notched his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod with 1,223 rushing yards, 616 receiving yards and 18 total touchdowns.
In the year prior, Gibbs posted a career-best 1,412 rushing yards and fell just shy of 2,000 yards from scrimmage with 517 receiving yards. His 16 rushing touchdowns led the NFL.

When it’s all said and done, Gibbs should reset the market at running back, at least when it comes to total value and annual average.
Miami Dolphins rusher De’Von Achane holds the high-water mark for total value ($64 million), and Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is tops in annual average ($20.6 million), according to Over The Cap .
The record for guaranteed money belongs to Arizona Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love at $53 million, although that is a result of how rookie contracts work.
Barkley is next in guaranteed money at $36 million and chances are Gibbs will be closer to that mark, although we would not rule out him at least approaching Love’s total.

We could very well see Gibbs get a four-year deal that exceeds $83 million in total value.
That would put him atop the list of running backs when it comes to annual average and total value, and there’s enough room for him to surpass Love’s guaranteed money mark, also.
