Film breakdown: What can Emmanuel Ogbah give the Chiefs in Year 11?
On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced the signing of a familiar face. The team announced that they had signed veteran defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah. A ten-year NFL veteran, Ogbah notably played for the Chiefs in 2019, helping the team win Super Bowl LIV and finishing the season with 5.5 sacks, tying his career high at the time.
A pectoral injury in Week 10 caused him to miss the Chiefs’ legendary playoff run, but his performance helped him sign a multi-year contract with the Miami Dolphins , where he played from 2020 to 2024 and had 29 sacks.
After being released at the end of the 2024 season, Ogbah signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars , where he served as a reserve.
Ogbah played in 38% of the Jaguars’ total defensive snaps and primarily lined up at defensive end, while he did shift inside to the defensive interior on some snaps.
At 32 years old — and slated to turn 33 in November — Ogbah’s best football is likely behind him, but due to severe depth issues at defensive end, he will have a chance to make the roster and find playing time in Kansas City.
Looking at the film from 2025
The Jaguars were the fourth NFL team the former second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State has played for, and statistically, 2025 was one of the worst of Ogbah’s career.
Finishing the season with fewer than a full sack and only ten pressures, it was statistically the worst pass-rushing season of his career, and the second-fewest snaps he played in.
Ogbah made most of his impact in the run game, where his long frame still helped him to make stops.

His experience, ability to recognize plays and play-scheme-sound football are likely why the Chiefs were interested in adding him to the roster, especially since they lack a seasoned veteran presence among the depth pieces comprising the back end of the roster.

While his explosive power is not what it once was, he still has the base strength and length to take on combo blocks against teams that run a high percentage of zone looks. The length and base strength help him keep offensive linemen off him and either make plays or set up his teammates.
Rushing the passer in limited looks last season, Ogbah struggled to build momentum, but the hope for the Chiefs is that he can regain his footing and become a player capable of finishing with between three and five sacks.

The power he once possessed to bull-rush and crush pockets is not what it was earlier in his career, but his length and motor remain the same.
On the snap, he wins the inside hand battle against the right tackle, presses him into the backfield, and as the quarterback climbs in the pocket, he works back to the inside and comes up with the sack.
The bottom line
There should be no illusions that Ogbah is here to save the day; the edge unit will still be thin even with the addition, but what he can provide the Chiefs is a veteran presence and a player with a decent floor for 2026.
George Karlaftis is the only edge rusher on the Chiefs roster with extensive experience, and at the bare minimum, Ogbah should be able to step in and eat up snaps as a run defender and help provide leadership to the Chiefs’young defensive line.
The best-case scenario would be for Ogbah to return to the form he displayed during the 2024 season, but this may not be in the cards for him at this point either.
The worst-case scenario would be a career full of injuries and general wear and tear from a decade in the trenches, causing an even further drop-off, which could cause Ogbah to not make the active roster or be released early in the season.
Ultimately, general manager Brett Veach, in his typical fashion, is willing to bet on familiarity and players who know the system. His best football is likely behind him, but the Chiefs have a role that Ogbah can fill as the team continues to develop the young players on their roster.
