Olympic and twice world champion champion Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland will not return to alpine skiing from a severe knee injury and has ended her career.
Gut-Behrami, 35, told broadcasters RSI on Wednesday evening she had "the honour to experience a long career, to express my wishes and dreams through my skiing and to experience this journey alongside extraordinary people."
Gut-Behrami wanted to ski a final season in 2025-26 with the Milan/Cortina Olympics but suffered a ruptured cruciate and medial collateral ligament as well as a torn meniscus in a training accident in November 2025.
The injury sidelined her for the season and she left it open at the time whether she would add a final campaign in 2026-27.
"Despite 20 years of elite sport, crashes and injuries I have had no recurring pain and don't want to have it. For that reason as well I have the feeling that the right moment has come - the moment when I no longer have to insist, at all costs, on reaching and exceeding my limits," she said.
Gut-Behrami made her World Cup debut in 2007 and won 48 races. She won the overall World Cup twice, in 2016 and 2024, and seven discipline titles, six in super-g and one in giant slalom.
She won the super-g and giant slalom at the 2021 world championships and Olympic super-g gold a year later. In all, she has 12 medals from worlds and Olympics.
