Roger Craig made his long-awaited pilgrimage to Canton on Saturday, receiving his Hall of Fame bust after mercifully being enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The former 49ers standout, who became the first player to post 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, embraced the spotlight during his address, reminiscing on the high points of an 11-year career like few others in NFL history.
Craig also shed light on his struggles with dementia. The four-time Pro Bowler was diagnosed with the ailment recently. His doctors believe it might have something to do with concussions he suffered during his playing days.

Roger Craig announces dementia diagnosis during HOF speech
Craig opted to pre-record his Hall of Fame speech instead of delivering it in front of the Canton faithful. In his recording, Craig revealed that he was recently diagnosed with vascular dementia, also known as vascular major cognitive impairment, according to the Mayo Clinic. The condition is the second-most common form of dementia, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. It takes place when decreased blood flow damages brain tissue.

“My doctors believe [it] may be related, at least in part, to the concussions I experienced during my career,” Craig said. “The changes were gradual. At first, they were easy to dismiss as normal aging. Over time, my family noticed it, too, and ultimately led us to seek answers from my doctor.
“Two things can be true: Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I could imagine. It helped shape the man I became. At the same time, we know more today about brain health than when I played, and I hope sharing my story encourages people to pay attention to their health and seek help when something doesn’t feel right.”
Craig vowed not to let his diagnosis shape the way he views himself. He also expressed hope that his revelation could aid others in similar predicaments.
“I want people to know this diagnosis doesn’t define me,” Craig said. “I am still Roger Craig. I am still a father, a husband, a teammate, a friend and someone who loves this game and the people who brought it to my life. If sharing my story helps even one family or one former player, then it’s worth it. Football gave me everything.”

Craig was one of the league's most durable tailbacks in his prime, missing just six games across his eight-year Niners career, five of which came in his final season. He played through myriad injuries throughout his time in the league, regularly suiting up despite his ailments. It's unclear how many concussions Craig suffered during his time in the NFL. However, he acknowledged that he suffered multiple head injuries as a player.
