The summer of 2026 saw a wave of movement across the NBA. As multiple stars changed teams, some teams changed owners in what has been a transformative period. For Lakers guard Bronny James , however, it’s just another typical summer.
With the young guard currently with his team at Luka Doncic’s basketball minicamp , he seems completely unfazed by recent events, particularly the departure of his dad, LeBron. When asked about it by a fan, James Jr. shrugged it off, reminding him that he has access to the King anytime he wants.

Bronny, 21, was drafted 55th overall in 2024. Coming from USC, Bronny had some college experience, but it was heavily limited due to a cardiac arrest he suffered before his Freshman year. Nevertheless, Bronny worked hard to return to action and regain his strength, earning a spot on the Lakers alongside his dad, LeBron .
Together, the pair made history as the first father-son duo in NBA history. It was a dream come true for both father and son, who shared plenty of special moments on the court. For Bronny, in particular, the experience helped build his confidence, develop his game, and ensure a comfortable transition to professional basketball.
So when LeBron suddenly left the Lakers this summer , it raised many questions about Bronny’s future. Initially, some thought he might be cut, while others speculated that he would follow LeBron to his next NBA team. As it would turn out, though, neither is the case. Even with LeBron set to suit up in Philadelphia next season, Bronny remains committed to the Lakers, as he’s proving with his attendance at Luka’s minicamp .
From the team’s perspective, keeping Bronny is an easy choice. With averages of 2.7 points, 0.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game on 40.9% shooting, he won’t play a massive role going forward, but he brings stability and maturity to the locker room as someone with the right approach. He also sets an example for his teammates with his relentless work ethic behind the scenes.
Practically, it’s unclear how the Lakers plan to use Bronny, but they believe he can be a viable backup point guard with his elite ball-handling and basketball IQ. He’s already close with his teammates, is a selfless athlete, and costs virtually nothing with his near-minimum contract. If he can only develop his skills as a shooter, it will make him even more valuable to the team.
Ultimately, there’s no denying the whiff of uncertainty in Bronny’s future. With a $2.4 million team option for 2027-28, this upcoming season could make or break his Lakers tenure. Yet, there are no signs of concern from James Jr. He’s confident in his game, and he’s willing to put in whatever work is necessary to maximize his impact on the floor.
Clearly, Bronny has learned a thing or two from his LeBron, and it’s already gotten him a long way. Going forward, he’ll no longer have James to bail him out, but he will no doubt relish the opportunity to go against his dad when the Lakers face the 76ers next season.
