Monken addressed the media prior to the third practice of training camp. The questions ranged across the spectrum, from the fans to the progress his team's making during the ramp-up period.
Here's a look at what Monken had to say July 31.
Todd Monken on 1st day of fans at training camp
"Oh, it's cool because you go a couple of days and the vibe's already there because of the start of camp. So I think it's awesome that after a couple days, three days, you get the crowd here, kind of pumps it up. It just does. Little bit like when you're in college and you're in spring ball a little bit, goes a few days and then you get a few NFL scouts, kind of picks it up a little bit. Or you got to put guys in NFL shirts so it looks like you have scouts there, something like that. Get the juice going a little bit."
Todd Monken on series of practice penalties being definition of sloppy football
"100%. I mean, that's a direct reflection on the head coach and us on offense. I mean, we had nine penalties in offense and they were all pre-snap. Now, what does that mean? It means we're not there yet. We don't play yet. We're not going to stop trying to be elite at cadence. You can't say you're elite on offense unless you're elite at cadence. You can't go on the same snap count. You do a disservice to your O-line, so we're going to keep doing it until we get it right."
Todd Monken on point of emphasis for Day 3 of training camp
"Well, today is third and extra long. So first day was third medium. Third long. Today's third and extra long. We'll still work no huddle. What else? We obviously have the shells on. It's a little longer practice. You go from an hour and a half to hour and 45 to two hours. So we'll work at the end some of our plays on third and extra long. Our third day install includes our three level routes. So first day was quick game. Yesterday was triangle reads. Today is three level routes. So it goes in that order. So each day you're only doing pieces of your passing game. And then by, we have eight installs. By the time you get to nine, then we really focus on who we want to be."
Todd Monken on regression from offseason program
"Oh yeah, both. You're exactly right. There's both of that. You're going to have some guys that have been super diligent, whether it be in the spring or then in the last few days, and it'll come back easily for them. Or guys that have gotten more reps, because not everybody's gotten equal reps. Some of the other guys, it doesn't come as easily for them. And that's why you reinstall. That's why you go back out there and practice the fundamentals, which is really what matters. We're installing. So there's a large part of scheme, but none of it matters if we're not fundamentally sound in our footwork, our IDs, our communication, all of that."
Todd Monken on Dillon Gabriel
"I though he looked really good yesterday. I mean, did some really good things. Guy's a good quarterback. I mean, you don't get to this level. Same with Tay, you don't get here without being elite. I don't care if you're a coach. I don't care if you're in this building, you're at the top of your profession, coaching and playing and everybody else in this building. So they are talented players. We just don't have enough reps to go around. So how does that have the ability to change with any player in a roster? Keep doing what you did yesterday. Whether it's him or anybody else that isn't getting the same amount of reps. But I thought he really functioned at a high level, had a really nice bench route where he anticipated the throw, but he prepares like he's going to get first team reps, which is awesome."
Todd Monken on Cleveland Browns cadences
"No, it's on all of us. It's on his coaches. Are we doing it enough in the walk? Are we emphasizing it on the field? But we added. So yesterday we added three cadences. Today we'll add two. So we'll be up to five, three, we'll be up to 10 cadences. Okay. So that's a lot. Well, we're going to throw it at him. And they're all for different scenarios, right? And different modes we want to be able to play in. And in order to do that, there's got to be some mental stamina that comes with it. And that's hard when you, especially with the old line and the quarterback, you're up there communicating, right? The epicenter of what makes an offense go. And all of a sudden you lose track a little bit of what? What the cadence was. It was a change of cadence, right? So there's communications.
