See the full story · 2 sourcesThere is no reason to panic or say that Drake Maye is having a slow start, as even the best of the best have had bad practice days. However, the New England Patriots QB1 didn't look like his usual self on day two of training camp.
During Sunday afternoon, the third-year quarterback looked uneven with his passes on the practice field as the defense made things pretty interesting when drills got more competitive.
Patriots.com writer Evan Lazar noticed this, describing Maye's second day of practice as a "shaky day." He would also acknowledge just how good the defense looked on the field against Maye and the offense.

Maye would also have a bad back-shoulder throw to Brown that went over his head. This was an interesting thing to see because Brown's and Maye's chemistry has been a well-spoken-about thing going into training camp.
"I was going to try to start off camp with a bang," Maye told 98.5 The Sports Hub. "But I've gotta make a better throw for him."
Let's not jump to conclusions here. One bad practice from a quarterback in his third season does not signify trouble in paradise. Maye finished 2025, completing 72% of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He has an even better roster around him, some would argue. He was a close runner-up for NFL MVP in voting as the season progressed into the offseason. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford edged him out.
If Maye is the competitor we know him to be, Monday's practice could be a bounce-back for him.
