The Toronto Blue Jays could be a very intriguing team to watch at this year's trade deadline.
Just one season removed from a trip to the World Series, the Blue Jays are nine games below .500 (50-59) in last place in the AL East.
Toronto's Wild Card hopes aren't dead yet. As of Thursday morning, the Blue Jays were 5.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final spot.
Should the Blue Jays buy or sell? That is the glaring question.
According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal , they may be doing a little bit of both in preparation for 2027.
"The Toronto Blue Jays, five and a half games out in the AL wild-card race but trailing five clubs, figure to be sellers," Rosenthal wrote. "With so much money coming off their books, though, they also are pondering buy scenarios as they seek to retool, according to people briefed on their intentions."
Blue Jays have several impending free agents
Toronto's notable impending free agents include George Springer, Daulton Varsho, Kevin Gausman, and Shane Bieber. Rosenthal noted that's $72.5 million coming off the books this offseason.

"Reliever Jeff Hoffman, another player Toronto might trade, is under contract for next season at $11 million," the MLB insider wrote. "So, if the Jays want to take on money for 2027 and beyond, they should have the flexibility to do so."
The direction the Blue Jays take at the deadline should be one of the more interesting developments to follow over the weekend and into Monday.
The Blue Jays want to compete next season. Perhaps 2026 just wasn't their year.
