See the full story · 1 sourcesWith the month of August here, a potentially important date for Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts is approaching, with the quarterback's trade request still on the table.
According to ESPN's Stephen Holder , within the first 15 days of training camp, Richardson is due a roster bonus of $4.24 million for this season. As long as he is still on the team by that due date, Richardson will receive that bonus.
So what does this mean for Richardson and the Colts moving forward?
Once that bonus is paid, any team that were to potentially trade for Richardson would no longer be on the hook for that money. Instead, the acquiring team would only owe him his $1.14 million base salary.
Considering that Richardson's trade market never seemed to truly develop, this could help faciliate some movement, with there being less of a financial commitment to land him.
Whether or not that transpires, however, remains to be seen. Richardson will still have to perform well in training camp and during the preseason to entice teams.
For now, GM Chris Ballard's intention at this time is to keep Richardson. The Colts aren't going to "give him away," he said.
That said, the team also realizes that the possibility of Richardson ending up elsewhere is still on the table. As has been the case since Richardson requested this trade back in February, we will remain in wait-and-see mode.
