See the full story · 1 sourcesWhen the Tennessee Titans took the field last night against the San Francisco 49ers, there was a bit of surprise on the starting offense, as rookie Fernando Carmona got the start at right guard over veteran Cordell Volson. And Carmona more than held his own.
While the performance was not perfect and there is still some work to be done in pass protection, his early run-game work was noticeable. After the contest, head coach Robert Saleh weighed in and liked what he saw.

He’s, you know, he put his foot in the door, and he’s doing his best to pry it open and blast through that thing. So he’s done a nice job. I’m looking forward to seeing the tape to see how he performed. I think I feel like it was pretty good. Like I said, I thought all three groups ran the ball pretty well today, so there’s going to be a lot of good stuff to take from it.”
After the game, members of the media caught up with Carmona and talked to him about his performance and the start, and he responded with what he tried to accomplish.

It is clear that Carmona is in the mix, and after the performance, he may be considered the frontrunner to start the season at right guard, which would be a huge boost for the offense if someone steps up as a potential long-term solution at that position.
