Everything Texans RB Woody Marks said following Day 6 of training camp
Here's everything Houston Texans running back Woody Marks after from Day 6 of training camp, including the growth of the offense, his role in 2026 and the overall attitude of the team entering Week 2 of camp.
Question: On the offensive line, and the physical edge they bring
Woody Marks: “It’s the little details. Climbing up to the second level, taking good routes to the linebackers, getting out in space running when we’re pulling. Those guys are coming with feisty attitudes. I would say the two main guys who I have seen that we’ve had no pass on were [Keylan] Rutledge and [Jarrett] Kingston. Those guys are fireballs on offense.”
Q: On what differs on the offensive line from last season
“The details. They want to do it. The guys are just out there and they’re playing together. I would say they are well connected this year.”
Q: On his growth entering year two
Marks: “I would say my first season, I was a little nervous around this time. I have a feel for it now. It's slowed down. I can really just be myself and not try to do too much. I’m not thinking about the play and I’m just doing what I do, just play ball.”
Q: On what has changed pre-snap to make it more efficient this season
Marks: “Urgency in the play calling. Getting it in and everybody knowing what they have, making it as precise as we can.”
Q: On whether it feels more efficient in pre-snap
Marks: “I feel like we're moving faster.”
Q: On having RB David Montgomery in the room this season
Marks: “It's been lovely. Just being around him and being around all the guys in the room, we have a real great connection in our room. We hang out all the time. We lift together. We get in the cold tub together, hot tub together. We’re really tight in that room.”
Q: On how much more comfortable he is in Offensive Coordinator Nick Caley’s offense this season
Marks: “We’re importing more stuff. Some of the things we couldn't do last year, we can do this year. Just by everybody knowing what they have to do. Putting in different plays, different routes with us, playing the running back out wide, put him in the slot, running two back running backs on the field. He's putting a lot of stuff in and we’re picking up on it well.”
Q: On whether he wants to expand as a receiving running back this season
“ Marks: Yeah, for sure. I think he’s doing a good job right now to put me out in different places in a three and a two and on the outside. He’s doing a great job. I’d say the receivers are doing a great job with helping us with the routes and how to get off press and doing all types of stuff. Working with those guys, I'd say over the summer and during Training Camp right now, it's been good getting releases as a receiver.”
Q: On the play when LB Azeez Al-Shaair punched the ball out from him in practice
Marks: “It was a quick turn. I have to turn quick and just tuck the ball quicker.”
Q: On what has to change to prevent himself from allowing defenders to punch the ball out on receptions
Marks: “I just have to get my head around faster. But yeah, that's it.”
On which ways he talks to the offensive linemen to work together
Marks: “I would say in our screen game. We talked a lot yesterday with the defense too, on just how we can get better at screens with the offensive line with the twists and pick stunts that our defense does. It’s about going over there and not being afraid to say something to those guys because they’re going to need us in the back end to help up in the front end with them. It’s just getting a good relationship with them, it's been good. I would say we've been picking up more blitzes than we did last year.”
Q: On what he likes about C/G Keylan Rutledge
Marks: “I love him. He's the guy who’s going to show up on film every time with toughness. You could kind of see it yesterday with him and Azeez. He’s not scared of anybody. He isn’t going to back down. He has a lot of fight, he wants to be feisty. He wants the chance to attack. It doesn’t matter who it is. He’s going to go after him. You sometimes have to pull back on him, but we like to see that fire coming out of a rookie on the offensive line.”
Q: On what he tells the rookie RB Noah Whittington
Marks: “I just tell him to take a deep breath. When you get in the huddle, take a deep breath. When you get into the backfield, take a deep breath. I had to learn that last year, just to slow the game down and not be so anticipated to go out there and do something that's not right. Going out there and doing something that's wrong. I told him yesterday, just slow it down. He comes to the sideline always asking questions. I was like, ‘You just have to take it one play at a time. Don't keep repeating a play over. You’re going to forget it.’ He's doing a good job.”
Q: On trying to lose weight for this season
Marks: “Yeah, I was around about 217, 218 pounds last year. I'm like 212. I’m trying to be in the range of 212, 210. I feel more explosive and faster getting out my cuts and running routes and sinking my hips.”
