San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music Festival kicked off its 18th year on Friday with the first day of the three day music festival. Friday was headlined by British pop star Charli XCX. Fans made their way by the tnes of thousands to see Charli XCX and the many other artists spread out across the festival’s seven stages.
Organizers said this year’s event at Golden Gate Park was sold out.
This festival is a test of the city’s transportation systems following major traffic issues on the Fourth of July that left people traveling by transit, rideshare, robotaxi, and car stranded for hours.
The city urged people not to drive to the festival or park in nearby city streets. Instead, they encouraged fans to take special SFMTA shuttles straight to the festival entrance or the Judah Muni line which is walking distance from Golden Gate Park.
The city also recommends attendees walk, bike, take e-bikes or scooters, or get a ride. There are designated rideshare drop-off and pick-up spots near the festival and Waymo rides are available in an area a few blocks away from the event.
Traffic in the Richmond District following the festival Friday was slow but still moved forward, with crowds of attendees walking home and many using e-bikes and scooters to make their way through the city.
