Chase Utley put the finishing touch on his Phillies legacy Friday night, and he did it with a speech that captured exactly what made him a franchise icon. The former second baseman was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame before the team’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park, becoming the 51st inductee in franchise history.
Utley delivered an emotional address that reflected on what the city and organization meant to him over his 13 seasons in Philadelphia.
“You don’t really just play in Philly. You survive it, you earn it, and if you’re lucky, you grow from it,” Utley said. “To me, this city is about passion, it’s about emotion, it’s about toughness, but most of all, it’s about winning.”

Utley spoke to the standard the city held him to throughout his career, one he said pushed him to become the player he ultimately became.
“For 13 years, I tried to play the game that this city expects us to play. Hard, honest, no shortcuts, no excuses, and you let me know every night whether I was doing my job,” Utley said. “That’s what I love most about this city. Because in Philadelphia, you don’t get respect, you have to earn respect. And standing here tonight, knowing I may have earned a small piece of that respect from you, that means more to me than everything.”
He closed by expressing gratitude for everything the city gave him in return.
“Philly, you gave me so much. You gave me a career, you gave me teammates who would eventually become family, you gave me a championship,” Utley said. “And now, to have my name forever connected to this organization and this city, that’s something I will carry with myself forever. So thank you, Philadelphia, for everything you gave me, and for making me feel like a part of your family. I will always be proud to be a Philadelphia Philly.”
The induction capped a career that made Utley one of the most beloved players in franchise history .
A first-round pick in 2000, Utley helped lead the Phillies through the greatest sustained run in franchise history, five straight NL East titles from 2007 to 2011, two pennants, and the 2008 World Series championship.
Across 1,551 games in Philadelphia, he hit .282/.366/.481 with 259 home runs, 1,025 RBIs, and 1,103 runs scored, and he remains tied for the World Series record with five home runs in a single Fall Classic from the 2009 series. He is now considered a strong Hall of Fame candidate , drawing 65.5 percent support on this year’s early BBWAA ballot tracking.
Utley became the third member of the 2008 championship team to join the Wall of Fame, following Jimmy Rollins and former general manager Ed Wade, whose inductions came a year earlier.
