Head coach Mike McCarthy shared some insight about Joey Porter Jr.’s contract negotiations.
The young cornerback’s hold-in is continuing less than three weeks away from the start of the regular season.
Porter Jr., once again, was working individually off to the side on Monday. It is something he did the majority of OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
However, he’s been on the PUP list since training camp.
The cornerback was a late addition to the initial list GM Omar Khan had told us about.
Monday, we learned Jalen Ramsey was being activated from the PUP list.
Head coach Mike McCarthy was asked if there’s a point this preseason they need to see Porter Jr with this defense.
McCarthy admitted it’s been a challenge for both sides.
“I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter. I know our defensive guys will love the opportunity. So, you know, we’re at an impasse right here, and you gotta respect that. Every one of us has a contract. The organization, they have beliefs and so forth, so, but yeah, that’s just kind of where we are,” McCarthy said.
Ramsey, meanwhile, is really advocating for his fellow cornerback.
He answered just a few questions on Monday as he spoke with the media for the first time since returning from his injury.
“We need the whole secondary out there. They’ve got to pay Joey Porter Jr.,” Ramsey said.
