By Eyewitness News Tuesday, August 25, 2026 9:00PM Two people were killed in the violence crash on I-78. NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Two women were killed Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer overturned onto a car on Interstate 78 in Newark, New Jersey State Police said.
Troopers responded to the crash at 9:08 a.m. on I-78 East at milepost 56.8 in the local lanes.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Mack tractor hauling a utility trailer was traveling eastbound when it approached a Chevrolet sedan stopped in traffic in the left lane.
State police said the driver of the Mack tried to swerve to avoid the stopped Chevrolet, but the truck overturned onto the car.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 42-year-old Ayesha Wright of Newark, and her passenger, 25-year-old Kendra Rouse of Newark, suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries.
The crash caused lane closures and delays along I-78 East Tuesday morning.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
