He got his start as an offensive intern with the Cleveland Browns back in 2014 before moving up to offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015. His first big assistant role came with the San Francisco 49ers as a passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2017.
From there he moved onto offensive coordinator with the New York jets in 2021, and he moved onto the same position with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. But now, he’s calling the shots in Arizona.
Moments before making his Cardinals coaching debut, LaFleur got a special visit from his brother Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers .
While there was typical jesting between siblings, there was also a touching moment of mutual love and respect between the two that NBC viewers got to witness.
“Hey man, you’ve earned this [opportunity],” Matt said. “Go let it rip, have fun, and I’m proud of you buddy. I love you, man.”
“I did not expect that right there,” Mike said. “I appreciate that, guys. That's pretty cool. I appreciate that. Now you've got me a little emotional.”
There were plenty of positives to take away from the Hall of Fame game, but Mike’s debut didn’t end on a high note. The Cardinals lost 33-30 to the Carolina Panthers in a game that featured mostly second- and third-stringers.
If Mike’s coaching career is as successful as Matt’s, he would presumably be thrilled with that level of success.
In seven seasons with the Packers, Matt has compiled a 76-40-1 record with ix playoff appearances, four double-digit win seasons, three division titles, and two NFC Championship Game appearances.
