In a world in which college athletes are being paid millions of dollars to play, it looks as though the NCAA is still harping on the small things like we are still living in the past. Should this come as a surprise? Probably not, given the organization is still trying to hold onto any power they have left within this current ecosystem of college athletics.
Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended two games by the NCAA for accepting a flight paid for by an NFL agent after he decided that he would try his hand at professional football after the 2025 season and signed with representation.

How much was the plane ticket? A measly $427 that only came when Carter decided to enter the 2026 NFL Draft. This violation, which is a Level III, is pretty far down the totem pole when it comes to NCAA standards on rules.
But, because Carter had accepted this travel from a professional agent, compared to the hundreds of NIL or college agents that are roaming throughout college athletics, it doesn’t matter that Arion had repaid the $427 earlier this year.
Yes, you read that right. In a world in which much more egregious rules will be broken on a random Tuesday, Carter is being punished for signing with an NFL agent and accepting an airline ticket.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the NCAA has a rule that says if a player declares for the draft and signs with an agent, he cannot return to the collegiate ranks.
But, these were uncharted waters, given Arion Carter was hurt very early in the process, and did the smart thing by returning to college.
It wasn’t as if he waited until three weeks before the NFL Draft. In reality, there needs to be a process for players to return if something like this happens. Carter wasn’t chasing a lucrative bag, given that he had already declared and Tennessee even announced his intentions.

We have athletes that have played professional baseball for ten years currently on rosters in college football.
But, the NCAA draws the line and also states he should actually be indefinitely suspended, so they are doing Carter a favor by only handing down a 2-game judgement (after they initially wanted 3 games).
After declaring for the NFL Draft, the Tennessee linebacker started the process of working out in preparation for his professional career. It was during one of those workouts where Arion Carter suffered an injury that forced him to make a decision about whether he should return for one more season of college football.
Ultimately, he decided to take his name out of the NFL Draft process and return to Tennessee for the upcoming season.
At last week's SEC Media Days in Tampa, Carter represented the Vols and had this to say about returning to Tennessee after a setback.
"Coming back off my injury and ultimately choosing to come back to the University of Tennessee was a pivotal point in my life. I fell like I made the greatest decision I possibly could have made," Carter told reporters.
Somewhere in the realm of college athletics at this moment, there is a player cashing a check from a university or third-party collective that is in the five- to six-figure range.
That's the world we live in now, where even high school athletes are being promised private-jet hours to entice them to sign with a school. Heck, there are schools offering athletes actual real estate property for future investments to sign with a college.

Have I mentioned that athletes are making seven-figures a year to play sports at the collegiate level?
"This is ridiculous, if that's exactly how it played out," one Power-4 general manger told OutKick-FOX News. "I just had a player in my office looking for a $30,000 raise before we start Fall camp, and the NCAA is punishing a player for making the right decision when it comes to his long-term viability when trying to play football.
"What are we doing? Look, I usually have zero sympathy for an opposing school we're competing with for players, but I feel horrible for the young man."
Did the NCAA take on Tennessee this aggressively because of past litigation? I mean, possibly, given that the Vols essentially sued the organization in order to steer them away from potential penalties related to the recruitment of Nico Iamaleava years ago.
Sure, there could be pettiness involved here. Or, the NCAA is once again trying to puff their chests out to send a message that they are still in charge of rules and penalties.
Personally, I'm going with the second option.
