Four-star Javon Bardwell , a top-20 overall recruit in the 2027 class, has decommitted from Kansas and is reclassifying into the 2026 class, he told Rivals.
The 6-foot-6 native of Harlem, New York has been committed to the Jayhawks since last October. He initially picked KU over offers from USC, Texas, Louisville, and others.
Bardwell provided the following statement to Rivals:
“First and foremost, I want to thank God for the ability to play the game I love. After the feedback I have received from my performance at Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy, I have made the decision to reclassify to the class of 2026. I am on track academically, and I feel ready physically and mentally. With that being said, after a lot of prayer and deep conversations with my family, I have also decided to reopen my recruitment.
“This decision is not a reflection of the coaches at the University of Kansas. To Coach Bill Self, Coach Tony Bland, and Coach Jeremy Case, I want to thank you for the relationship you built with my family and me from day one. My recruitment is now open as a member of the 2026 class. — Javon Bardwell”
Bardwell is ranked as the No. 18 overall recruit and the No. 5 ranked small forward in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking . His ranked will now be re-evaluated with his move into the 2026 class.

This summer playing with Compton Magic on the adidas 3SSB Circuit , Bardwell averaged 20.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
Scouting Bardwell
Rivals’ national recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw provided the following scouting report on Bardwell:
“Javon Bardwell plays his best when the game opens up and players get up and down. He is able to just hoop, and when that happens, Bardwell is able to be a shot maker. He can find space on the court and he can rise up to knock down shots from different levels. Bardwell is a solid athlete, nice fluidity, with positional size and length. He moves well off ball and he attacks spots in the mid range areas.”
