Angel Reese already had established herself as one of the most relentless rebounders in WNBA history. On Monday night, the Atlanta Dream star officially climbed into a category of her own. Reese collected a league-record 26 rebounds during Atlanta’s 78-71 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena. She broke the previous single-game record of 24, which Chamique Holdsclaw set with the Washington Mystics in 2003.
The former LSU standout also surpassed Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson’s single-season rebounding record. Reese ended the night with 458 rebounds, adding two major accomplishments to a rapidly expanding résumé.
The WNBA celebrated both records following the game, calling it a “historic night” for Reese.
This was not simply another double-double. It was the most productive rebounding performance the league has seen.
Reese dominates without needing a big scoring night
Reese finished with 11 points, 26 rebounds, three assists and three steals as Atlanta completed an undefeated four-game West Coast road trip. Her shooting numbers were modest, but she continued creating opportunities through sheer activity around the basket. Reese grabbed eight offensive rebounds and 18 defensive rebounds, repeatedly ending Los Angeles possessions or extending Atlanta’s.

Allisha Gray led the Dream with 20 points, while Rhyne Howard contributed 18. Naz Hillmon added 12 points as Atlanta improved to 25-13 and strengthened its position in the race for home-court advantage.
Los Angeles dropped to 13-25 after entering the game already eliminated from postseason contention.
Reese’s historic night came at the end of one of her best individual stretches of the season.
She scored a career-high 31 points against the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday. Two days earlier, she delivered 20 points on perfect 9-of-9 shooting, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 124-88 rout of Wilson and the Aces. Reese did not maintain that scoring efficiency against the Sparks, but she found another way to control the game.
An offseason gamble pays off for Atlanta
The Dream acquired Reese from the Chicago Sky during the offseason, betting that her rebounding, physicality and growing offensive game could help elevate an already talented roster. That gamble has paid off.
Reese is averaging 16.1 points and 12.4 rebounds through 37 games. She has given Atlanta another star to place alongside Gray and Howard while helping the franchise reach the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season. The 24-year-old has also continued to improve as a passer and scorer. Her eight assists against Las Vegas showed how dangerous Atlanta can become when opponents send multiple defenders at her inside.
Her rebounding remains the foundation of her game, however, and Monday’s performance provided the clearest example yet. Breaking a record that stood for more than two decades would have been enough. Passing Wilson’s single-season mark during the same game made the accomplishment even more remarkable.

Dream move closer to home-court advantage
Atlanta currently occupies fourth place in the WNBA standings, sitting behind the 26-13 Aces and ahead of the 25-14 Indiana Fever . If those positions hold, the Dream would have home-court advantage for a first-round series against Caitlin Clark and the Fever. That would be a rematch of last season’s opening round, which Indiana won.
The Dream still have six regular-season games remaining. They will host the Portland Fire on Friday before facing the Minnesota Lynx on Aug. 30. After the league’s World Cup break, Atlanta will play home games against the Connecticut Sun and Chicago Sky before closing the regular season with two road matchups against the New York Liberty .
There is still work to do before the playoffs arrive. But after finishing a perfect road trip with a record-setting performance, Reese and the Dream appear ready for it.
