Bengals' Who Dey chant ranks below Saints' Who Dat on new list
There's nothing like the roar of the jungle. Just ask Bengals fans.
Sports Illustrated recently released its ranking of the NFL's 10 best stadium chants and fight songs . The Bengals ' "Who Dey" chant ranked No. 6, behind the New Orleans Saints ' "Who Dat" chant at No. 5 and ahead of the Miami Dolphins ' fight song, "Miami Dolphins No. 1," at No. 7.
The Minnesota Vikings ' famous rallying cry, “Skol Vikings!,” ranked No. 1 overall.
According to the report, the Bengals' chant, which began in 1981, was inspired by a local car commercial and Cincinnati's Hudepohl Brewing Co., which was founded in 1885. Beer vendors used to sell the local beer by shouting "Hudy!" to fans at the team's former Riverfront Stadium.
The website said the slogan later evolved into "Who Dey" after fans incorporated a jingle from Red Frazier's Ford of Cincinnati commercials that states, "Who's going to give you a better deal than Red Frazier ... nobody!"
The combination of the two catchphrases resulted in one of the league's most recognizable chants: "Who dey? Who dey? Who dey say is gonna beat the Bengals? ... Nobody!"
SI notes the Bengals' chant is similar to the Saints' "Who Dat" chant, which dates back to the late 1800s but was first connected to the team in 1983 . Although the two cheers have sparked "some contention" between the fan bases over the years, the chants have become "game-day traditions" for both teams.
