Pro hoopers shine at Jersey Shore Basketball League before playoffs
MANASQUAN— As the regular season of the Jersey Shore Basketball League winds down, each game becomes more crucial for the playoffs that start this week.
On Tuesday night, two of the top teams in the league got wins with rosters filled of elite talent in the Manasquan High School gym. County Line Auto Body and Sterns Trailor each got dominating wins. Both teams will get a bye past the opening round Thursday and will play on Monday in the quarterfinals.

Newark native Josh Treadwell drops 34 to help team stay unbeaten
In the second game of the night, County Line Auto Body defeated RKE Athletics 113-95, backed behind Josh Treadwell’s 34 points.
The Newark native played at Rutgers-Newark and Coppin State for college and has been overseas the past six years; earlier this year he played for the Jersey Shore Breaks in the pro United States Basketball League (USBL), where they won the the league's 94X50 Championship. He also recently played in Iran and was stuck there for two weeks due to the ongoing war. He played in France, Mexico, Czech Republic, Georgia and had a short stint in the G-League. He plans on continuing to play around the area in tournaments for the rest of the summer.
On Tuesday he knocked down midrange jumpers all night. Whether it was contested or open, he helped his team create a big lead in the second quarter that rarely had a dent.
“I always expect myself to come out and be a scorer," Treadwell said. "That's what they bring me here for. Even just on the Jersey Shore Breaks. They bring me in to be a scorer. They don't expect anything less, so it works out."
Though both teams already know which seed they’re entering the playoffs, finishing the season strong was important. RKE is second to last. County Line sits at the top as the only unbeaten squad.
There’s also some other Jersey Shore Breaks players on the County Line team.
“It's easier when you have chemistry," Treadwell said. "Summertime everybody comes out with different backgrounds and it's hard to get a chemistry going, we already had that. Obviously off the court too, we're all brothers so it works perfectly for us."
"To do it again, it's staying together," said Jachai Simmons, who had 10 points. "It would mean a lot. JSBL, this would be my first winning ever. Coming off a championship with the Breaks, then to come in and win the JSBL would be amazing."
Jersey native Jalen Gaffney drops 24
The first major impression of the night was when Sterns Tailor got a 104-95 victory over Larson Ford despite having only seven players available. Though Sterns gave up some runs, which they'll have to clean up.
“Play some damn defense,” said Jalen Gaffney on what'll take to win it all. “Defensive rebound, the offense is always gonna come. In this league a lot of people can score so you got to have defensive rebounds.”
There were warnings of flash floods in the afternoon that lasted through the night which may have impacted guys showing up. Nonetheless, former high-major guard Gaffney stepped up for the Sterns with his 24 performance. The former UConn and FAU player got hot early with 21 points in the first half. Gaffney said he hasn’t played in two weeks and is waiting for a pro contract. He says playing against pros helps his game develop.
“There’s definitely a difference,” Gaffney said. “I think you got to make a lot of quicker decisions, be efficient, (you’re) not going to get a lot of shots… I just kind of learned the game a lot more. Swing the ball, shoot when you’re open.”
Larson Ford had a full 12-player lineup but couldn’t get it done. Then Sterns got out to a double-digit lead early and added to it. Though Larson Ford made a comeback attempt in the third quarter, it didn’t last long.
Sterns sit second in the standings with a 5-2 record.
