5 sleepers to make the Broncos' 53-man roster this summer
With preseason set to begin this week , position battles are about to heat up, and players on the roster bubble will be competing for a job with the Denver Broncos .
Today, we're taking a quick look at five sleepers for Denver's 53-man roster going into preseason. Notably, only one player on this list made our recent 53-man roster prediction . They are all long shots, but they will get opportunities to impress over the next three preseason games. There's usually at least one surprise on the active roster each summer, and any one of these players could be next in line to overcome the odds.
5. WR Kolbe Katsis : He'll have a hard time breaking into an extremely crowded wide receiver room, but Katsis could impress as a returner this summer. Katsis joined the club as an undrafted free agent this spring after impressing special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi .
4. OLB Johnny Walker : There hasn't been much buzz about Walker this camp, but that could be in part because Denver's so deep at outside linebacker. Walker missed all of his rookie season with a lower body injury , and he'll now aim to impress during preseason.
3. WR Cam Ross : He'd have to fend off the likes of Shaun Fresch, Michael Bandy and Katsis, but Ross could be a long-term returner option in Denver. Marvin Mims is scheduled to become a free agent in 2027, and the Broncos might begin planning for the future on special teams. Ross and Katsis are among the returners to monitor this summer.
2. CB Brent Austin : The undrafted cornerback has been consistently mentioned as a standout at practice. It would be extremely hard to crack Denver's stacked cornerback depth chart, but if Austin stands out in preseason, the Broncos might not be able to risk losing him on the waiver wire in an effort to get him down to the practice squad.
1. LB Taurean York : Red Murdock could also be on this list, but as a draft pick, Murdock seemingly has a bit of an edge over the other players on this list. As for York, he was a highly-coveted college free agent this spring, and he might have the best odds of all the team's undrafted rookies to make the active roster this summer. With backup linebacker spots up for grabs, York and Murdock will be key players to watch in preseason.
Following preseason, the Broncos will have until Aug. 30 to finalize an initial 53-man roster. After that, clubs will make waiver claims on Aug. 31 before building 16- or 17-player practice squads . So even if these players don't make the active roster, there would be room for them on the practice squad in 2026.
