San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a horrific car accident that took place on July 14. While news of the incident took nearly two weeks to surface, the details that have just come to light are even more worrisome.

Any time someone is involved in a car accident, the first thought that comes to mind is whether those affected by the wreck are okay. Thankfully, Shanahan is okay.
Yet, while some of his injuries had previously been disclosed, such as suffering a concussion, a broken nose, a broken hand, and fractured ribs, now even more details have been uncovered.
The New York Post recently got hold of the audio recording from Shanahan’s 911 call. That’s where the woman officer on the call can be heard saying there is “one driver bleeding from the head.” That driver turned out to be Shanahan.
“It’s going to be a black Tesla vs. a blue Mercedes,” the woman said. “There are reports of one driver bleeding from the head.”

Shanahan then had to be transported to a hospital, where he had to receive 40 stitches to his face.
The head coach still managed to show up to 49ers training camp for roughly 30 minutes on Sunday. Yet, it could be a while before he resumes his full head coaching duties.
Assistant head coach/offensive line coach Chris Foerster is handling head coaching duties in San Francisco on an interim basis until Shanahan returns to health. Foerster has been with the 49ers since 2019.

49ers general manager John Lynch said that Shanahan is currently basically in the concussion protocol, much like a player goes through after a hit to the head.
“Kyle basically is going to be like in the protocol,” Lynch said. “Doc [Anthony Saglimbeni] and all the great doctors we have are giving him great care, and we’re going to let you know [his] condition… the doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back.”
The 49ers don’t play their first game until September 10, when they travel to Melbourne, Australia, to take on the new and improved Los Angeles Rams. There is no word on Shanahan’s expected timetable to return.
Yet Shanahan is regarded as one of the NFL’s best head coaches, using a scheme that other teams often borrow plays from. His absence will definitely be felt. Yet, having someone like Foerster, who’s been with the 49ers for several seasons, plus several high-impact veterans on both sides of the ball, could help minimize the loss.
