Christian Gonzalez is back on the practice field for the New England Patriots.
The team’s star cornerback has missed nearly two weeks of practice since reportedly suffering an injury in the Patriots’ August 10 th training camp session. In Monday’s session, he was in full pads and fully participated, looking quick and comfortable in individual and team drills.

Gonzalez is one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL, and the market rate for the league’s best corners was recently raised when Seattle signed Devon Witherspoon to a $132 million extension with more than $101 million in guaranteed money and an average yearly value of $33 million.
On the opening day of Patriots training camp, July 25, team owner Robert Kraft said they were offering Gonzalez the largest contract in franchise history and one that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league. As of Monday, August 24, no new deal has been reported.
Gonzalez didn’t speak to the media Monday, but his teammates commended his professionalism and presence at practice while waiting for a new contract, and now working back from injury too.
“I think he’s honestly handling it as best as I can imagine anyone in his situation is handling it,” Patriots safety Kevin Byard said. “I think he’s being a pro. This is a life-changing situation for him, you know what I mean, I get it. He’s not in the locker room pouting or not being himself, so I think he’s handling it very well.”

He loves lining up and playing against the best, being one of the best corners, if not the best corner in the league. It doesn’t matter what he has going on, he’s going to line up and play.”
Head coach Mike Vrabel was asked about his concern for Gonzalez’s readiness for week one given the time he’s missed in camp.
“I’m going to focus on today,” Vrabel said. “I’m not ready to talk about Week 1. I hope that we have to do everything we can to get the guys ready. Each guy has to be ready individually, and then I have to find a way to make sure that the football team is ready and that we’re conditioned and ready to go.”
The Patriots open the season against the Seattle Seahawks on the road Wednesday, September 9.
