See the full story · 1 sourcesNew England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel gave an update on rookie quarterback Behren Morton’s progress and role with the team prior to the start of the team’s seventh training camp practice.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Vrabel stated that Morton has been developing well with the valuable workload that he has been given in practice thus far.
“I think he’s got a live arm,” Vrabel said. “I think that he learns quickly. I think he’s been able to operate that third group and get those guys going and build a connection with some of the young receivers.”
The Patriots selected Morton with the No. 234th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Texas Tech product had a strong senior year with the Red Raiders last season, having led the Big 12 in completion rate at 66 percent and thrown for 2,780 yards.
Morton is currently the Patriots’ third string quarterback behind Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito. Vrabel has given Morton a healthy share of opportunities in practice this summer, which has the rookie quarterback in position to make an even greater impression on the coaching staff and vie for a larger role on the depth chart for the remainder of the offseason.
“I think it’s just a balance,” Vrabel said regarding the seemingly larger amount of reps that Morton has gotten compared to last season’s third-string quarterback in training camp. “It’s just trying to find a balance of, how much does Tommy need as the backup? And how much does Behren need as a young player that we are excited about developing. And then be able to, at some point, put him in a competition for that job.”
The Patriots have six more training camp practices after their go-round on Saturday, including three joint practices, which will give Morton more opportunities to develop under Vrabel.
