Asked during a recent KNBR interview whether Joey Bosa might be signing with the San Francisco 49ers anytime soon, Nick gave a jokingly resigned answer, suggesting that the idea of Joey "training" for an NFL comeback isn't exactly where his brother's head is at these days. Asked if the team should keep their phones on for a call, Nick said, "Nah, probably not."
It's the latest signal that the older Bosa's playing days may be behind him, and that a reunion with his younger brother in San Francisco isn't in the cards. Nick had already hinted at his brother's 2026 plans back in May , suggesting retirement could be on the table for the two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher.
Even if Joey wanted to keep playing, the 49ers may not have been positioned to make it happen. General manager John Lynch threw cold water on the idea of a free agency reunion back in March, essentially saying a Bosa signing would be too expensive for San Francisco. This, despite the 49ers having the most salary cap space in the NFL at this point in the offseason.
Bosa, 30, spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Chargers before being released last offseason. He signed a one-year deal with the Bills for the 2025 season, but injuries limited him throughout his career in recent years, including a torn labrum during the 2025 campaign. For his career, Bosa has recorded 65 sacks across 111 games, though he's played a full 17-game slate only twice.
The younger Bosa, meanwhile, remains the centerpiece of San Francisco's defensive front despite returning from a torn ACL in 2025. And while it would be cool to see the two brothers play together, it doesn't sound likely.
