Patriots coach provides encouraging update on second-round pick
Gabe Jacas is trending in the right direction, according to Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.
The second-round edge rusher is on the non-football injury list after an offseason knee procedure, but it sounds like he’s nearing a return at training camp.
“Gabe continues to progress well,” Vrabel said on Thursday morning. “I would say that he’s closer to the return-to-play element... excited about that.”
It’s been an unusual first offseason for Jacas, who was the NFL’s last second-round pick to sign his rookie deal.
Jacas didn’t come to terms until the Patriots were getting on the field for the first day of training camp and the contract has an uncommon injury waiver. Ultimately, both sides agreed to a $8.66 million deal with $6.95 million guaranteed.
Now, Jacas is trying to make up for lost time in the classroom.
“He wants to be out there as soon as he possibly can,” Vrabel said. “I told everybody this, I told Gabe this, there would be a return-to-play (protocol) when he got back. So he’s attentive in meeting and he’s watching practice. He came in on his off day and met with Smitty (linebacker coach Mike Smith) and did all those things that he needed to do.”
New England’s edge group has been thin at camp this summer.

In addition to Jacas, veteran Harold Landry (PUP list) has been sidelined with a knee issue of his own. Without putting firm timelines on either, Vrabel expects Jacas to return to first.
“I probably would say Gabe is closer to coming back than Harold is,” Vrabel said.
