At one point, Ron Washington was instructing Chad Tracy. Now, the former can’t help but be impressed by his former pupil and the success he’s had with the Red Sox .
Washington is the current infield coach for the San Francisco Giants, a team that just visited Boston this past weekend. Before that, he managed the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014. Several players went through the Rangers’ system during his time there, including Tracy.
Starting as a catcher, Tracy was selected by Texas in the 2006 MLB Draft. While he saw playing time elsewhere, Washington worked with Tracy, especially at first base. He saw something in Chad, something his dad, Jim, had as a former manager himself: discipline and a good attitude.
Chad’s commitment to the game saw him move from player to manager, becoming the skipper at Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox parted ways with Alex Cora in April after going 10-17 to start the year, with Tracy taking over as interim manager.
The Red Sox are one of the hottest teams in baseball under Tracy. They went on multiple win streaks, including winning 15 straight. Several of their top hitters, Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras, and Caleb Durbin, have become heroes in what’s been a season to remember.
"They had the talent," Washington said via The Boston Globe . "He got them to believe. I’m not saying they didn’t believe before. But now they’re believing as one.
"You look at them, and it’s not one guy carrying the load. They have five guys with close to 70 RBIs. That means they spread [it] around. That’s good managing. I’m sure his father is proud of him, and he should be."
With Tracy's leadership, the Red Sox own a Wild Card spot and are six games back of the Rays in the AL East. This has been without Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet, who have been on the IL for the majority of the season.
Everyone has stepped up, from the bench to the bullpen. An impressed Washington likes the fire he sees from Tracy and the Red Sox.
"The Red Sox were in the grave, and Chad brought them back," Washington said. "I know Boston and how much they care about baseball here. They have a good one."
