Felix Magath enjoying Lennart Karl’s rise at Bayern Munich

Few people understand the pressures of developing young talent at Bayern Munich quite like Felix Magath. The former Bayern Munich player and coach, who won multiple Bundesliga titles during his career and later guided Bayern Munich to a league and DFB-Pokal double as manager in 2005 and 2006, believes supporters should remain patient with highly rated teenager Lennart Karl.
Speaking about Karl’s journey from Viktoria Aschaffenburg to Bayern Munich, Magath explained just how proud the club is of one of its most successful academy products.
“Naturally, they are incredibly proud of him. They are delighted with the truly remarkable development he has undergone,” Magath told Abendzeitung .
Magath, who now serves as sporting director at Viktoria Aschaffenburg, also emphasized that Karl represents exactly the type of player the club hopes to produce.
“That’s my basic idea at Viktoria. Besides Karl and me, other club members have already made it into professional football. Rudi Bommer played in the Bundesliga, as did Marcel Schäfer and Daniel Baier. My intention is to try and develop players who can make the leap into professional football,” Magath stated.
While Karl has quickly become one of Germany’s most talked-about young talents, Magath believes the teenager will have his ups-and-downs.
“In the age of the internet, a young player like him quickly becomes a sensation. Lennart Karl was suddenly everywhere,” Magath remarked. “So, it’s perfectly normal that he’s now reflecting and processing his development.”
Magath also addressed Karl’s initial inclusion in Germany’s World Cup squad before he was injured, arguing that modern football often places unrealistic expectations on young players far too quickly.
“That’s the spirit of the times. These days, if someone makes a debut in the Bundesliga at a young age, they’re immediately hyped,” said Magath.
Coming from one of Bayern Munich’s most accomplished former coaches and a man who has spent decades identifying and developing talent, Magath’s message is clear: Karl’s potential remains enormous, but patience and support will ultimately determine how high the 18-year-old can climb.
