According to Fabrizio Romano , relayed via Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Sunderland have reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with Igor Paixão. Talks between the Black Cats and Olympique de Marseille are active. Marseille rejected Sunderland’s opening proposal, but negotiations haven’t collapsed.
Both clubs are still talking ahead of the September 1st deadline. The 26-year-old Brazilian left winger joined Marseille from Feyenoord in 2025 on a contract through 2030, yet severe financial difficulties at the French club are forcing them to cash in on their best assets. Leeds United, who tracked Paixão heavily under Daniel Farke earlier this summer, now face the very real prospect of a rival completing a deal they should arguably have closed weeks ago.
This is a strategic failure Leeds can’t afford to ignore.

Paixão had a genuinely productive debut season in France. Across 39 competitive matches in 2025/26, he scored 12 goals and registered 6 assists, including 4 goals in just 8 Champions League appearances. That European return, at roughly 0.5 goals per game in the continent’s elite competition, is the number that matters most.
Players who don’t fade under that pressure are rare. His passing accuracy sat at 85%, and his expected goals output ranked in the top 89th percentile among Ligue 1 forward units. These aren’t inflated figures from a soft domestic run; this is a player who delivered consistently across multiple competitions.
Farke’s system is built around inverted wide players who create volume, carry the ball under pressure and contribute directly to goals. Paixão provides the same sort of profile. Leeds United don’t currently have a winger who can pin low defensive blocks and still deliver in the Premier League, which they will need this season.
The valuation sits somewhere between £25m and £30m. Sunderland’s opening bid structure was rejected because of instalment terms Marseille didn’t accept, not the fee itself. That’s the gap Leeds United could exploit. A clean £28m offer, with a 15% sell-on clause attached, puts the Whites immediately ahead in this race. Farke needs to guarantee Paixão the starting left-wing position, because a player of this profile won’t come to Elland Road to compete for a spot.
Leeds United let this player choose Marseille over them twelve months ago. Letting him now join a PL rival, when the financial gap is genuinely bridgeable, isn’t just a missed opportunity.
