Nick Gonzales delivered the game-winning knock, and the Pirates’ bullpen delivered three scoreless frames in extras in a 3-2 12th-inning win over the Padres at Petco Park on Monday night.
Scoring Plays
Top 6th, 2-0 PIT: Esmerlyn Valdez broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run off Robbie Ray to open the inning. Bryan Reynolds followed with a walk and the Padres (71-61) turned to Bradgley Rodriguez out of the bullpen. Rafael Flores Jr. added another with an RBI double to center.
Bottom 6th, 2-1 PIT: Braxton Ashcraft appeared to have gotten out of the sixth inning unscathed on what looked to be an inning-ending groundout from Jake Cronenworth. But was balk was called before the pitch, allowing Freddy Fermin to score from third.
Bottom 8th, 2-2: Down to their last strike, the Padres tied the game when Cronenworth delivered an RBI single to center off Luke Weaver.
Top 12th, 3-2 PIT: The Pirates (64-69) reclaimed the lead in the 12th when Nick Gonzales singled home automatic runner Jared Triolo against Jeremiah Estrada (2-3).
