Middlesbrough picked up a 1-0 win over Wrexham at the Riverside this evening, to secure their spot in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur loanee Will Lankshear netted the only goal of the game for Boro in impressive style on the hour mark, when his overhead kick found the far corner.

Kim Hellberg named three new signings in his starting XI for tonight’s game: American duo Sebastian Berhalter and Max Arfsten, as well as Lankshear, who had a strong individual season at Oxford United last season despite the side getting relegated to League One. By contrast, Wrexham’s only new addition to feature from the start was Danny Imray on the right flank, whilst Ben Whiteman and Bailey Cadamarteri were named among the substitutes.
Oliver Rathbone registered the first shot of the game in the opening minutes and arguably should’ve done better with his headed effort, which ultimately went over the bar.
Imray had his first piece of defending to do after five minutes, when he cleared a cross behind for a corner, which subsequently forced an immense save from Danny Ward to deny Adilson Malanda at close quarters. The Summer signing was nearly impactful at the other end of the pitch shortly after, but failed to connect with Callum Doyle’s cross; had he done so, Wrexham surely would have taken the lead.
The best chance of the first half fell to Sam Smith, who cleverly kept himself onside before seeing his effort well saved by Solomon Brynn. Rathbone failed to hit the target again moments later, before Lewis O’Brien was shown the first yellow card of the night as the sides went in goalless at the break.
Lankshear took aim again early in the second half, but his strike flew high and wide. Smith was added to the referee’s notebook in the 55th minute for simulation after bearing down on goal and trying to round Brynn.
The breakthrough came dead on the hour mark, when Lankshear marked his debut with a spectacular finish into the far corner. Ryan Longman replaced Imray following the goal, in Wrexham’s first change of the night. Hellberg also turned to his bench at the same time, introducing Kyle Joseph and George Edmundson to replace Arfsten and Jeremy Sarmiento. Lankshear committed a bad foul shortly after, leading to a yellow card for the forward.
Whiteman and Cadamarteri’s debuts came in the 71st minute, replacing Rathbone and Matty James. Kieffer Moore was also brought on to replace Smith for the remainder of the game. Another debut followed for the Red Dragons when David Keillor-Dunne replaced Nathan Broadhead. Lankshear was then withdrawn for Finlay Cartwright.
Morgan Whittaker came close to adding a second for Boro late in the day, but his low effort clipped the post before going behind for a goal kick. Dominic Hyam and Doyle were both shown yellow cards in the game’s closing stages, as frustration built for the Welsh side who have now exited the compeition.
