Two members of the Buss family — Joey and Jesse — are buying into an MLB team, and not only is it not the Dodgers, but it’s one of the most hated division rivals of LA fans: the San Diego Padres.

The Buss brothers, through their investment firm Buss Sports Capital, is buying a stake of about 5% in the Padres, reports Dave McMenamin of ESPN .
They’re buying into the Padres as Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano take control through the private equity firm Clearlake Capital for a record $3.9 billion.
“Joey and Jesse announced they will be on the new ownership group’s advisory board and apply their experience with player development, payroll management and roster construction to support this new era in Padres franchise history,” McMenamin reports.
Why would the Buss family buy the Padres?
It might seem strange for the longtime owners of one of Los Angeles’ premier sports franchises to buy a San Diego team, but the Buss brothers said they were raised as Padres fans, not Dodgers fans.
“We are honored to join Kwanza and José and have the opportunity to contribute to the future of a team that Jesse and I have loved since we were kids growing up in San Diego,” Joey Buss said in a statement. “Sports have always been a part of our family’s story, and great organizations have a unique ability to bring people together and create a lasting sense of community. Padres fans have built one of the most passionate and loyal communities in all of sports, and we believe there is a tremendous opportunity to deepen that connection in San Diego and around the world.”

Joey Buss added that he believes the Padres “are on the cusp of something special.”
“Through Buss Sports Capital, we look forward to bringing our experience and perspective to the ownership group and doing our part to build on the strong foundation already in place,” he said.
Jesse Buss added that the brothers believe their experience in the Lakers front office will help them succeed with the Padres.
“Joey and I had the privilege of learning from our father and then spending nearly two decades building our own careers in professional basketball operations,” he said. “We saw firsthand what it takes to build a championship organization, and throughout our careers have applied those lessons across talent evaluation, roster construction, player development and long-term organizational planning. While every sport is different, we believe the principles behind building sustained success are universal.”
