Chicago acquired Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets on Monday for infielder Jefferson Rojas. Holmes hasn't thrown a big league pitch since May 15, when a 111.1 mph comebacker off the bat of Yankees' outfielder Spencer Jones broke his right fibula. Before that, he had a 2.39 ERA in nine starts with two runs or fewer in eight of them.
Holmes was the Yankees' closer in 2024, made his second All-Star team that summer, then lost his job in September. Then he went out and posted a 1.38 ERA over 13 innings the rest of the way, including five shutout innings across four ALDS appearances.

The Cubs have have needed a starter all season and finally got one they can hand the ball to in October. Holmes had a 2.39 ERA in nine starts before the fibula fracture and allowed two or fewer runs in each of his first eight. He's made three rehab starts ,and two executives who watched him last week said he's ready to get back to the big leagues. Taylor is a useful add. He hits .282 with a .569 slugging against lefties and carries a 137 wRC+ against them.
New York Mets : C
Rojas is a 20-year-old shortstop signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2022 as the 36th-ranked international free agent, so there's real upside. But one prospect for a starter who could front a playoff rotation and a platoon outfielder is a light return. It comes a day after the Mets moved Freddy Peralta for three players outside the top 100 . David Stearns spent the weekend selling arms, and he has not gotten a headliner back for any of them.
